I have been in medical practice for over 30 years. I am a general Internist who started by doing research for the first ten years of my career, and then practiced conventional medicine at a medical clinic in Oregon. Ten years ago, I left mainstream medicine to become an Integrative medicine physician. I gave up the ten-minute patient visits for longer ones in order to practice the kind of patient focused medicine I had dreamed of doing when I first went to medical school. Over the years in my varied career, I have picked up quite a few pearls of wisdom along with a hunger to find more ways to help my patients. I have been frustrated by the lack of options available when it comes to conventional medicine. Don’t get me wrong. There are amazing treatments and therapies available these days that have allowed our lifespan to increase. However, often I find I cannot help people as much as I would like because I run out of tools and possibilities. That’s fueled my search to step out of the box (actually to sometimes get rid of the box altogether) and find new, innovative ways to help people to heal and be well. Sometimes it requires going back to basics, and other times I have ventured into the wild world of new science, such as the exploding field of genetics and microbiology. Over the years, I have learned so much and found so many relatively simple ways to help patients that I realized it was time to share these ideas and suggestions.
That is how Healed was born. With the help of a very smart and fun colleague, Dave Kahn, I bring you this book. It will take you through the basics of what you need to know to promote your own health, and then together we will bring you to the leading edge of new therapies to treat common conditions such as depression, obesity, cancer and Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Often what seems new is in reality, really old. Some solutions actually go way back to the beginning of Western medicine. Others are just starting to revolutionize care. Finally, I know it sounds too good to be true, but it isn’t: we’ll introduce you to a form of exercise that is fun, exciting and will help improve just about whatever ails you.
HOW TO READ THIS BOOK
You can read this book from start to finish, but you do not have to go in order. We do think you will enjoy it in its entirety. It is meant to be read actively! So take notes, underline, highlight, and dog-ear the pages! We have provided you with a “cheat sheet” at the end of the book that will help you to discuss potential tests and treatments with your doctor that are not yet part of mainstream medicine. This will make it easier to initiate the discussion and organize your thoughts.
